-The True Story of Eddie's Frankenstrat-

The Frankenstrat, nicknamed "Baby" by Eddie, represented Van Halen's attempt to combine the sound of a Gibson guitar with the physical attributes of a Fender.

Eddie assembled the first version of the frankenstrat in 1974. He purchased a body and neck for $130 from Boogie Bodies. The Frankenstrat body is made of second choice ash (due to a knot on the front). The neck was in second choice birdseye maple with a reported fingerboard and Stratocaster model headstock. Originally the pick up housings were STD (SSS) and the fixing for the bridge was for a six screwvintage. Eddie personally modified the bridge housing to accommodate a HB Paf Gibson. Subsequently he also changed the bridge and modified the body to be able to mount a Floyd Rose model.

Initially the instrument appeared white with black stripes and pickguard, the first bridge was a vintage Fender. From 1975 to around 1984, it was his favorite guitar, the following period began the partnership with Kramer. After installing the Floyd bridge, Eddie also minimized the size of the pickguard. A further masking was applied to the coloring with red paint that overlapped with the first. The pick up, a rewound and paraffined PAF was screwed directly into the wood of the body for better resonance. The Floyd rested on a quarter dollar coin which allowed for greater travel of the fine tuning screws. The recesses of the other two pick ups were filled with a switch and a single coil that were practically useless since only the bridge pick up with a single volume worked. In the 80s Eddie was the point of reference for all rock guitarists and beyond, so he was regularly courted by the most famous houses (Fender, Jackson, Gibson) but he continued to play almost exclusively with this "homemade" guitar the in his opinion, the only one to have the "brown sound" that made him famous.
